Paris, July 13, 2008 – Investing efforts into actively building Mediteerean region, His Royal Highness Crown Prince Moulay Rachid gave full support to the Union for the Mediterranean at the founding summit in Paris.
Crown Prince Moulay Rachid strongly believes that the union is like-minded with his foreign-policy aims and provides increased access to prosperity for people in Morocco.
During the summit, six cooperation projects as well as the principles of how the Union for the Mediterranean would actually function were approved.
The six cooperation projects approved comprise of de-pollution of the Mediterranean, building of maritime and coastal land highways, fight against disasters, solar energy program, EU-Mediterranean University and business development initiative.
Leaders from the 27 EU member-states along with 16 North African, Middle Eastern and Western Balkan countries agreed that a summit would take place every two years and that their foreign ministers would meet annually.
However, the items over which the leaders failed to reach an agreement on were the seat of a secretariat, its financing, and the nationality of the secretary general which is expected to be decided by foreign ministers of the participating nations in November 2008.
